Kasumi

Kasumi, which means "mist," refers to the hazy or cloudy appearance of the blade's soft iron body, which contrasts with the very shiny appearance of ordinary steel. Specialized Japanese artisans forge Kasumi knives by joining a piece of soft iron with a piece of ordinary steel. After forging, hammering and shaping, ordinary steel becomes the edge of the blade, while the softer iron part becomes the body and back of the blade.
